Our Story
From a boy with a box to bees, trees, and a thriving legacy.
Macmandu began in 1988 in the hills of Mooi River, South Africa, when a teenage Dieter spotted a wild swarm of bees and, with a cardboard box and a bit of honey, gave them a new home. That moment sparked a lifelong love for bees, nature, and land stewardship.

As he tended his first hive, Dieter studied flowering trees, pollination, and bee behavior. By the time he finished school, his small hobby had grown into 17 hives on the family farm in Zululand.
​
After graduating from agricultural college as Best Nursery Student, Dieter turned his focus from bees to trees. With his father’s encouragement, he started a nursery producing strong, healthy macadamia seedlings. What began as one plot grew into five structures and more than 189,000 seedlings, earning a trusted place in the macadamia industry.
In 2016, Dieter and Marianka made the bold decision to leave it all behind and move to Australia. Starting from scratch, with little money and no infrastructure, they soon partnered with an Australian couple to help start a new nursery. It grew quickly, and after a few years and a friendly parting, they launched Macmandu in 2022, right in their own backyard.

They began again, planting macadamia seedlings in repurposed containers, nurturing the soil, and reviving their beekeeping journey, catching a wild swarm in the rain with only a bucket and courage. The bees stayed, and so did the vision: to build something sustainable, community-rooted, and lasting.

Today, Macmandu is a growing family business in the Clarence Valley, New South Wales, built on two things: Trees and Bees.

Where Macmandu Began...
At Macmandu, the nursery is where our roots run deep, literally.
Macmandu’s roots stretch back to South Africa, shaped by family farms, early mornings in the nursery and long afternoons spent watching bees work. Those early experiences formed the values that still guide us today, patience, care and respect for natural systems.

The move to Australia marked a new chapter, but the heart of Macmandu remained the same: start small, grow well, and build something that lasts.
​
Our founder, Dieter, launched his first nursery after graduating with honours in nursery management.
With his father’s encouragement and a commitment to growing quality trees the proper way,
he built a business that served hundreds of farmers.
​
Today, on Australian soil, that story continues.
Each macadamia seedling is nurtured with care and integrity,
from soil preparation to transplanting, supporting biodiversity, restoring the land
and feeding the bees that sweeten our honey.

Our vision is to create a thriving grove where bees, trees and people live in harmony, a place where every jar of honey reflects the land,
the hands, and the values behind it. We honour the rhythm of life, from seed to blossom, from hive to harvest.
Through ethical beekeeping, biodynamic land care and conscious sourcing, we commit to pollinating purpose by supporting biodiversity, seeding legacy through education, protecting natural cycles and cultivating connection between people, pollinators and planet.
We don’t rush the process, we listen to it. We don’t extract from the earth, we partner with it.

Our Team
Macmandu is proudly founded by a family and deeply rooted in the community.
At the heart of Macmandu is a small, passionate team led by Dieter and Marianka, who bring decades of experience
in macadamia farming, beekeeping and nursery propagation.
What began in our backyard, planting seedlings and catching swarms, has grown into a team that shares our values of care, sustainability and excellence. Our teenage son and his friends often join us in the nursery,
learning the rhythms of the land and the value of hard work.
As we grow, so does our vision to build a modern, ethical, purpose-led workplace that inspires future generations.
From grafting macadamia trees to harvesting honey, we are united by a love for the land
and the legacy we’re cultivating together.
